WHY MEL FEELS SO GOOD - JUNE 1ST 2001
Music Capital
Not-so-scary-anymore Spice, Mel B, is quietly carving away at her solo
career and hoping to follow the top ten success of 'Feels So Good' with her
new single 'Lullaby'. We caught up with her in the sunshine to chat about
'Lullaby', Phoenix, Max, the other Spices and how her feud with Geri is
officially over.
On 'Lullaby'
I write about stuff that's quite personal to me so Phoenix was the obvious
thing for me to write about because she is my life, she's my everything.
I've shielded Phoenix from the press quite well but then when it came to
doing the video for the song I didn't want to put anyone else in it.....
Lauryn Hill's done it, Neneh Cherry's done it, Will Smith's done it but I
didn't want to do in that way where it's like, 'Look here's my daughter', so
I got someone with a steady cam to film her just being her.
On her debut album 'Hot'
You can't expect the same success as I had with the Spice Girls but I'm
happy with it so far. 'Hot' hasn't been released in America yet and I don't
think I'm going to release it. I'm probably going to write another album
next year so I'm a bit more up to date with things.
On boyfriend Max Beesley
He wrote a song for me, for my album called 'Step Inside'. I've known him
for four years but not in that way, so I'd written about my past
relationships, but not about him. The thing is, I write from pain and he
doesn't give me any pain, he seems to be quite alright!
On the Spice Girls
We probably won't be releasing any more singles from 'Forever' but we'll
hopefully get some kind of a tour going next year - when everyone's finished
doing their solo projects - we do still manage ourselves and have a Spice
office together and we're all really good friends.
Luckily for all of us we've never surrounded ourselves with 'yes' people.
One thing I'm really proud of is we've kept our best friends from school. I
read an article about a group who have recently come out and had a lot of
success and one of them was saying they never see their friends anymore. I
find that really sad because that's what keeps you grounded.
The 'Raw Spice' documentary
It made me laugh - god I was such a brat! I had such girlie features, I
think my face has changed, I've got old or more 'womanly' or something has
gone wrong anyway! The actual footage of us was really quite touching, it
showed what we were like before anything happened. It just shows how tight
and confident and hard working we were... and still are.
On Pop Music
I think the market's overflowing, it's flooded - I don't know who half
these groups are! I think Destiny's Child and the Sugababes are fantastic,
they're getting up there and you can see they're enjoying it and they're in
control of their lives.
On Geri
I did speak to her a few months ago and we talk but it's never as close as
it used to be.... it's quite sad really, it will never be what it was. I
think she's a very, very clever lady and I take my hat off to her and say
good luck.
On TV show Number One
I'm going to Africa to do a documentary called 'Roots' on black magic,
voodoo and alternative medicine and things like that. I think it will take
away a lot of the myths that people have. Once you say 'voodoo' people think
of voodoo dolls and stabbing but it's nothing bad, it's about warding off
evil spirits.
On TV show Number Two
It's called 'This Is My Moment' and it's 'Stars In Their Eyes' meets 'Who
Wants To Be a Millionaire'. It's just giving the average person a chance to
sing. You win by voters calling in and however many voters call in, you get
that amount in cash. You call in, you sing your song and that's it! It's
great because I don't think a black or mixed race person has been holding
their own on a prime time show on Saturday night for a very long time.
