Mel C felt perfectly at home with the Spice Girls for five years. Now, Sporty's moving out on her own, and finding solo success. Tamara Ikenberg gets the inside story.

Q: So, is it true that you said in an interview yesterday that you're quitting the Spice Girls?

A: I could throttle that man who I spoke to yesterday. I'm not leaving the Spice Girls. The truth is that, at the moment, we've got no plans to release another single, no plans to record another album, but we're still together as a band. It's gotten absolutely crazy. It's on the front page of all the British newspapers. There are 15 paparazzi outside my door. I was chased in a car by paparazzi this morning. They caused me to have an accident.

Q:You'd think they'd stop after what they did to Princess Diana.

A: They will never learn, will they?

Q: Are you snogging anybody lately?

A: I've got a guy friend. But I don't get to see him much, because I'm touring at the moment. Hopefully, I'm going to hook up with him in the next few days.

Q: Hook up with him, like "see him"? Or is hook-up also a British term for "making sweet love down by the fire?"

A: It's one we've just adopted from watching American TV and movies.

Q: Does it bother you when pretentious Americans try to co-opt British-speak or are like Madonna and speak in fake British accents?

A: I don't really think Madonna is speaking with a British accent. I think if you're an American you're more aware she's changed the way that she's talking. I've still got a bit of an accent.

Q: Yes, you do. I'm afraid when I play this tape back, I'm not going to understand you. Do your American accent for me.

A: All I can say in New York speak is "Could I get a coffee please?"

Q: Very good, but they wouldn't say please.

A: Thank you.

Q: What's the biggest difference between your solo music and Spice Girls music?

A: With the Spice Girls, it's something we make as a team. We make this fun music together. As a solo artist, it's a lot more personal, so in some ways it's more serious.

Q: When you rap, you sound a lot like Salt N Pepa, who are also named after spices. Is that a coincidence?

A: I don't think we're trying to emulate them. We're all fans of Salt N Pepa. They have oodles of girl power.
