Emma Bunton talks to CAMERON ADAMS about the Spice Girls splitting (or not), tantrums and offers of film roles

So, have the Spice Girls split up or not?

No, no we haven't.

But you're not doing anything. There are no more singles from your album (Forever) and no tour.

Nothing is planned because we're busy with solo stuff, but we were talking about touring. Things are in the pipeline.

So the Spice Girls are dormant?

Probably. Well, I don't know if I'd say 'dormant', but we're taking a break to give each other space in our solo careers.

There was a lot of press attention when Melanie C stated, then retracted, that she'd left the band. Do you get the feeling that people want you to break up?

Yeah, and it's so weird how people can be so negative. Don't people unterstand that girls can work separately and together? We haven't split up.

There's a song on Forever called Tell Me Why that talks about how you were all betrayed by someone. Is it about Geri Halliwell?

That's so ridiculous. People think that every song we've done like Goodbye, that they're about Geri. No, Tell Me Why was written about guys, relationships we've been in. It had nothing to do with Geri.

When was the last time you saw Geri?

When she left (the band). But there's no competition between us any more. I'd look forward to seeing her again.

Have you ever had any star tantrums?

No, but I've seen a few. Well, not many. The first time we met Prince at Top of the Pops we were like 'let's go and see him' and the bouncers were like 'no, get away, you can't' and he opened the door and said 'no it's all right, let them in'. Usually it's the people around the star that make all the fuss and the star themselves is quite nice. I don't know if I believe the Jennifer Lopez stories, sometimes it's the people around them who mollycoddle them - 'she has to have this' - when they really don't care.

What was the last album you bought?

The Destiny's Child album. The Writing's On The Wall. I love every song on it.

Do you get offers to act in films?

I've had a few. I've got an agent here and one in America. I get sent scripts a lot, but I'm not one of those people that can do loads of different things at once. If I'm concentrating on music I have to focus on that. I'd love to do a little cameo, though.

What kind of offers do you get?

Well, I'm not an actress, but I've had some interesting ones. One about a bunch of girls on a hen night in Birmingham. That was cheeky, which was nice.

When was the last time you saw Spiceworld?

My friend made me watch it a little while ago. I've been friends with her for ages and she'd never seen it so she said 'come on, we have to watch it together'. So we did and we were laughing. If you watch it and you get where we're coming from it's hilarious. You've got to realise we're taking the mickey out of ourselves and the media, the whole movie is taking the piss, really. Some people thought 'God it's tacky', but they don't get it. A lot of comedians on telly have said it's one of the funniest movies they've seen.

What's your favourite Spice Girls song?

Easy. 2 Become 1.

Which song do you wish you'd written?

Happy Birthday. Actually, there are lots. I Will Survive. I wish I'd written that, it's a good karaoke track.

What Spice merchandise have you kept?

My mum keeps most of it. I've got the dolls, all the bits and bobs. I'd funny, you see Phoenix and Brooklyn playing with the Spice Girlls dolls, which is quite freaky. My mum says 'I want your children to play with your doll' and I say 'I'm sure there'll be lots of new dolls in fashion by then'.

What was the best rumor you've heard about yourself?

That I got married. That was so strange. It was my mum's wedding, Jade (Jones, her boyfriend) wasn't even there, so if I got married where was Jade?

Have you ever seen a Spice Girls cover band?

Yeah. We went to Las Vegas when we were on tour and there was a Spice Girls tribute band. There was Madonna, Michael Jackson tributes, then this Spice Girls tribute came on. It was hilarious. I was so shocked, to be amongst tributes to people like Madonna was amazing.

Were you upset when Westlife slagged you off last year?

I was really upset about that. I've met them a few times, we always got on really well, then all of a sudden they started slagging us off. I couldn't believe it. I personally have never slagged off anyone in the music industry, I never would. I know how hard everyone works. It's respect for everybody, I say. Then I thought 'I've met you so many times, you've been so lovely to me...' but never mind.

Have you seen them since?

No, but I might have a word to them. I'm half Irish, so we've always got on. I was shocked.

Have you got any stalkers?

No, I get the kids and the mums, not the stalker types.
