Worldpop Interview - A Mind Of Its Own!

Black Text = Worldpop interviewer Andrew Panos and questions from fans
Blue Text = Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham releases her new single, A Mind Of Its Own next week and worldpop caught up with her to talk about the future of the Spice Girls, solo success and a duet with Dr Dre? Surely some mistake!

On solo success and being overexposed!
worldpop: Do you ever worry that people might get sick of seeing you in the papers?
Victoria: A lot of the stuff that's written about me isn't through choice! It's stuff that's made up in the papers and I have no control over. I don't think I do a lot of promotion when I have a record out. Certainly no more than other artists. It's just that the stuff I do is always picked up on. And people seem to be more interested in my hair or shopping habits than as a singer/songwriter which, at the end of the day, is what I am.

On the legacy of the Spice Girls?
worldpop: Is it a lot to live up to, trying to be as successful as the Spice Girls in your solo career?
Victoria: I don't think any of us will be as successful individually as the Spice Girls were as a group. I think there's a lot of negativity about the Spice Girls now but we sold 40m albums around the world and did so much for the record industry. People forget that. This country is very negative about success. All they could write about was that the third Spice album wasn't as successful as the last one. I think that perception of us will change though.

On Pop Idol and Britney
worldpop: Are you gripped by Pop Idol?
Victoria: Yes, I love it. I really hope Will wins. He looks talented and he seems like a nice guy. A Pop Idol has to look like the girl or guy next door. They have to look like they could be your mate. That's why people like Britney because she has that girl next door look. I don't think shows like Pop Idol present a false image to the music industry. That's how people in the industry get chosen. When I was a dancer I had to go to hundreds of auditions. The Spice Girls got together through auditions but the difference was, it wasn't televised.

On superstar duets
worldpop: Who would you love to duet with?
Victoria: Dr Dre would be great. Or Snoop Dogg. I think with their cool, street edge and my pop sensibility we could come up with something really good. That's the music I tend to listen to - R&B and hip hop. David loves that music too. Would I duet with one of the Spice Girls? Not at this stage no. We're all doing our own thing and I wouldn't see the point. We want to prove ourselves as solo artists before we do anything together.

worldpop: Are you going to star in Bend It Like Beckham? The movie?
Victoria: Me and David may have a small cameo role yeah. We saw the movie the other day and it's really good. Shaznay from All Saints is in it and she's a really good actress.

Fans questions
How do you react to Kian from Westlife's statement. He said: 'We'd never do a Spice Girls and go back to the group after our solo careers haven't worked out.' - Dr Spice
Victoria: I don't know why he said that because we haven't got back together as a group yet. We're all still pursuing our solo careers. I don't think Westlife can compare themselves with the Spice Girls anyway. Spice were successful all around the world and while Westlife are a massive band at the moment they haven't had the kind of success we had.

Don't you owe it to the fans to tell them that the Spice Girls have finally split instead of them reading about gossip in the papers? - Me, Myself and Spice
Victoria: I do think it's unfair that the fans read gossip that's untrue about us in the papers, yeah, but we can't make a definitive statement on the future of the Spice Girls yet because we really haven't decided what the future of the band is at the moment. We're all doing our own thing and just seeing what happens.

Is it true you're going to film an Audience With show for ITV? - Spice Child
Victoria: I have been asked to, yeah, and something like that may happen around Christmas time. I've also filmed this documentary on ITV that's being screened in March. Cameras followed me about for four months. You'll see the real me. I don't have any real tempers like Elton John in Tantrums And Tiaras but it's quite revealing.

What's the most expensive thing you've ever bought? - Rebecca
Victoria: Probably my house. I also like art so I buy that but I don't spend as much money as people think. I'm not shopping 24 hours a day! I like furniture too so I tend to buy lots of nice things for the house.

Interview: Andrew Panos
Camera: Kali Dhillon

A Mind Of Its Own is released 11 February
